Review of Report Designer Preview

So I just downloaded and installed the July CTP to try out the new report designer preview.

Overall, I like its look and feel. It’s much cleaner and I like its ease of use. The dialogs have all been improved.

Tablix is neat but its functionality is almost pointless for my reports unless interactive sort gets improved. Ideally interactive sort would allow you to sort like excel for example

2008 2007

1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4

Group1 Group2 Group 3

Ideally, the user would be able to click on any one of the Year or Quarter Group members and sort anyone of Groups1-3 relative to that Year or Quarter. At the very least the user should be able to click on a Quarter or Year Group member and sort one of Groups1-3 relative to that quarter.

I like how easy it is to change the contents of a cell.

It would be nice to be able to see the xml from the designer, I rarely have used this but sometimes it comes in handy.

I would like to be able to preview my reports without deploying them.

I hope that the expression editor dialog and query editor dialog aren't complete yet because I like the functionality in current VS dialogs.

I can't figure out how to change the chart to any type other than a Bar. I think this is probably because they are yet to be implemented. The chart does seem like an improvement on the current chart set.

I can't figure out how to add code to my report, I believe this is not possible because the Report Properties dialog is missing.

For whatever reason creating a new data source and dataset process feels much faster and more streamlined even on the VPC.

I hope that VS will still allow me to edit reports with all the improvements of RS 2008. I have several report projects in a solution with a web project and I would like to be able to keep that configuration in the future. Will VS 2008's enhanced wizards be able to target RS 2008?

It would be nice to have an integrated spell checker and XPS/Doc export support.

On a unrelated note, I hope that I can integrate future versions of report viewer with the ajax update panel or that it features built ajax.

Overall, it looks good and I wish I had the tool now. I guess it’s not as big of jump as I thought it would be but maybe as we get closer to release I will change my mind.

Thanks for taking a look and providing feedback so quickly. We appreciate it. Some answers to your questions:

On interactive sort, I think you should be able to get what you described. Check your sort expression.

XML will definitely be available when the designer is reintegrated back into VS.

CTP 4 allows you to preview without publishing but you still need to let us know which server to use for previewing. Local preview will be available in VS.

Query builders will be available when the designer is back in VS. Same with expression editor.

Chart improvements coming in later CTPs.

Code not supported in CTP4, again will be in VS.

Not sure which VS wizards you are refering to. We are looking into integration with VS2008.

Integrated spell checker - great feature request.

Report viewer and ajax - we would love to get to this work.

Thanks for responding,

Interactive sort for me still works like it did 05, which is to sort a matrix you can only place the sort button in the little empty place in the top left hand corner. Furthermore, it works against the entire quarter group rather than against the particular quarter. If this has changed I would love to see an example to try it out.

Which reminds me in drill through reports:

They should have page breaks when collapsed just like they do if all the groups are expanded. I have yet to try this out with enough data to see if this has been fixed.

They should not collapse if a user hits interactive sort. In other words sorts and expanded/collapsed should maintain state. Furthermore, you should be able to sort the outer groups and then sort inside an outer group. For example sort all fruits, and then sort the member citrus. Right now you can sort either all fruits or all citrus but not both at the same time.

The sort by and then by(sort by name, then by tons) with ctrl click should be cleaner.

Did the Dundas deal include Dundas Map for Report Server, I'm assuming the answer is no but I seem to remember a earlier blog most that made me think it did?

The corner cell in a matrix can now have several columns, which should help your sort labels. You can definitely sort within a quarter - you just need to change the scope of the sort.

Drill down never changes the pagination. Not sure what you are referring to.

The problem with maintaining the show hide state is because you could actually change the group hierarchy by sorting. I realize that if you only sort within a group, this is not the case but we would have to detect that.

The Dundas deal does include Map for RS but we are not sure whether we will have time to integrate i

Could you give me an example of how to scope that?

I have a report that uses 3 nested groups

OOOO

DDDD

XXXX

YYYY

If I don't use drill down the pagination is correct. If I use drill down I get no pagination in report viewer only in print mode or when they are saved into a file format.

Count our vote for integrating the map control.
